Diabetes mellitus Type II (non-insulin dependent diabetes) is a long-term metabolic disorder that is characterized by insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency, and hyperglycemia. The diet most frequently recommended for individuals with this type of diabetes is one consisting of high fiber especially soluble and low in fat and sugar. Patients are usually encouraged to reduce the amount of high glycemic index food that they consume.

However in the case of hyperglycemia, patients are encouraged to have food or beverages that raise blood glucose quickly. Then they should consume a long-acting carbohydrate (such as rye bread) to prevent further risk of hypoglycemia. For people with diabetes it is not only important what you eat, but also how often you eat .

Hyperglycemia is a condition in which excessive amounts of glucose circulate throughout the blood plasma. This is just one of several symptoms of diabetes. Some others are frequent excessive urination and an extraordinary thirst which can go hand in hand.

Diabetes prevention is the route that doctors are looking towards in order to reduce the costs for care of diabetes. One of the preventative solutions they recommend is that individuals should be referred to an effective ongoing support program targeting weight loss of 7% of body weight. They also recommend increasing physical activity to at least 150 min/ per week of moderate activity such as walking.  As we are learning as a society that most diseases are caused by an excessive amount of inactivity amongst humans. There are numerous studies that show that inactivity more than anything else is the cause for a very large number of diseases in our society. As part of our corporate wellness initiative, we are bringing in a diabetic specialist on the 16th of November at 12:30pm in the cafeteria.
